101 degrees

96 degrees at 3:50pm today, down from a high of 101 degrees.

Think about it: how often do we allow the weather to have any influence over what we do on a day-to-day basis? Farmers and fishermen still live by the forecasts, searching the skies for clues to the predicted changes, knowing how much wind or rain is too much, when to stay in, when they must go out. For those of us not so attached to the earth, it’s only when we get the extremes of weather that we pay attention. The intrusions of 101 degree heat cannot be ignored–it affects our breathing, saps our strength, makes us sweaty and uncomfortable and miserably human.

To be human is to be dependent on Another for life and we go to great lengths to try to forget that. We live in air conditioned homes, we work away from the elements, we watch entertainments to distract ourselves from discomfort; we try to live in our own tightly controlled universe that we can be god of.

Today, being out in the sweltering heat reminds us that we are human, we are frail, and little changes in our living conditions can not only take us out of our comfort zone, but can lead to death. Jesus said “apart from me, you can do nothing” (John 15:6) and we understand that in a deeper way because of what we can no longer control.

Lord, let me my frailty that you are the giver of life and that apart from you, I can do nothing. Amen.

Than you, Lisa. That last paragraph really hit home. So little can make me so uncomfortable and be so dangerous. Thank You Lord for Your control.
